Event details: Great Sites of the Ancient World : New Surprises from Ban...
Description
From its discovery by a Harvard student falling on some sherds along a back village alleyway in the 1960s, to its recent central role in the biggest U.S. case to date on international antiquities smuggling, Ban Chiang has repeatedly made headlines. Penn Museum has been the lead scholarly institution investigating this fascinating ancient culture for more than three decades. Dr. Joyce C. White, Senior Research Scientist and Director of the Ban Chiang Project, presents one of her newest "in press" and surprising findings concerning one of the big Ban Chiang debatesââ¬"the source for the earliest bronze metallurgy at the site and in Southeast Asia generally. She also gives a first-hand account of her three-year participation in the investigation of Ban Chiang smuggling, including her role in the Federal raids of several California and Chicago-area museums in January 2008. $5 general admission; free for Museum members. Information: 215/898-4890.
