Description
The Wood Turning Center awards seven prestigious fellowships through its International Turning Exchange(ITE) program for four wood/lathe artists, a scholar, a sculptor/ educator or furniture maker/ educator, and a photojournalist – selected from an international pool of applicants. Deadline for 2011 residencies: October 1, 2010. About the Residency: The International Turning Exchange(ITE) is sponsored by the Wood Turning Center (WTC), hosted by the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, and comprises the following: An 8-week residency program for wood artists, a scholar, a sculptor/ educator or furniture maker/ educator, and a photojournalist who will live and work together and create new bodies of work. Residents will receive a $400 honorarium per week, roundtrip transportation to the residency location, housing, and an allowance for materials. This is a hands-on workshop designed for artists to focus on advanced technical innovations, aesthetics, and techniques, and for a photojournalist and scholar to participate, observe and interact in order to gain an understand of the wood art/turning field and its practitioners. The photojournalist’s role is to document the experiences of all the residents into a product with educational value. Residency Requirements: In addition to helping with fundraising efforts prior to the residency (acceptance is not based on fundraising efforts), residents are asked to participate in three educational events associated with the International Turning Exchange. These are discussing and demonstrating the creative process and their techniques at an event open to the public, participating in an exhibition at the end of the residency which shows their new work, and participating in a symposium in the gallery where they describe their residency experience and new work. In addition, the residents donate one object representative of their new work, either created individually or collaboratively during the residency, to the WTC’s permanent collection. The photojournalist will document the residents and the program-including the artists at work and at play, adding perspective to the creative process. He/she will also document the educational programs associated with the residency. The documentation produced depends on the photojournalist’s unique proposal and the specific skills they bring to the task. The Wood Turning Center invites new interpretations of 21st century documentation techniques. He/she will also participate in the exhibition to be held at the end of the residency, donate one copy of the document to be used in the Center’s educational programs, perhaps creating a version to be published in Turning Points, the Center’s on-line publication.
