As a four-time Grammy-Award winner and multi-Platinum recording star, Tracy Chapman is recognized as one of folk-rock's most celebrated entertainers. Tracy Chapman emerged as a touring sensation in the late '80s and combined political activeness with her homegrown sound to achieve widespread success. The Ohio native's musical talents were honed at a young age and Chapman was performing by the time she was in high school. While at Tufts University, Chapman performed throughout coffeehouses and local venues before landing a contract with Elektra Records in 1987. Chapman's self-titled debut was a critically acclaimed folk-rock classic that featured her smash hit, "Fast Car", which reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went multi-Platinum and she won three Grammy Awards in 1989 including Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Folk Recording. Tracy Chapman continued to record throughout the '90s and achieved heightened success with her fourth album, New Beginning, which was released in 1995. Since reaching the peak of her commercial success, Chapman has continued to record and tour. Most recently, she released her eighth album, Our Bright Future, in 2008 and was subsequently nominated for another Grammy in 2010 for Best Folk Recording.
