The Ohio native's musical talents were honed at a young age and Chapman was performing by the time she was in high school. While at Tufts University, Chapman performed throughout coffeehouses and local venues before landing a contract with Elektra Records in 1987. Chapman's self-titled debut was a critically acclaimed folk-rock classic that featured her smash hit, "Fast Car", which reached #6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went multi-Platinum and she won three Grammy Awards in 1989 including Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Folk Recording.
