Absolutely right, Mr. Tancredo. I find it sickening that the Democratic candidates speak about reducing the debt and the high cost of the Iraq War, yet they continue to try and unnecessarily spend money. Clinton's supposed Woodstock Museum is one famous example (denied, courtesy of John McCain). I read an article in the Washington Post about helping illegals, giving them amnesty, like he felt that they were being persecuted against. He did not mention that illegals have broken our law, and are thereby criminals, and every gain they make is at the expense of a bona fide American. I think we ought to make a greater effort to assimilate Hispanics into America, but to allow any kind of amnesty will act as a catalyst to those 20 million more who are on the fence (metaphorically and literally) about illegally entering the US. Jobs are being lost, the minimum wage is becoming a hindrance, and our economy is being compromised as a result of politicians trying to pander to the Hispanic vote by favoring illegal immigrants. I see legal Hispanic immigrants as the next wave of Irishmen and Germans entering the country; Reagan, Kennedy, and Eisenhower are all descended from that wave of immigrants. We ought to embrace them into our culture, but to extend the hand of welcome to criminals is unacceptable

Bio
Tom Tancredo, a lifelong Coloradan and native of Denver, has represented Colorado's 6th Congressional district since 1998. Tom is a school teacher by trade; and taught for several years at Drake Junior High before serving in the Colorado Legislature and in the Department of Education under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. He also headed up the Independence Institute, a free-market think tank based in Golden, CO prior to being elected to Congress.

In 1999 he founded the bipartisan Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, which he still chairs. By the end of the 109th Congress it amassed 104 members. Under his leadership the caucus was instrumental in passing the The Border Protection, Anti-terrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act through the House of Representatives in 2005. The caucus also blocked the Kennedy-McCain amnesty provision from passing through the House in 2006. Tom has written about the dangers of illegal immigration in his 2006 book, In Mortal Danger: The Battle for America's border and Security.

Tom is a member of both the House International Relations and Resources Committees. As a member of the International Relations Subcommittee on Africa, Congressman Tancredo authored the Sudan Peace Act which was signed in 2002 by President George W. Bush.

Tom and his wife Jackie have been married since 1977. They have two children and five grandchildren.

When Tom is not in Washington, you can usually find him either trap, skeet, and clay pigeon shooting, or with his grandsons, building trains, racing cars, riding bikes, or playing ball.
