It's hard to believe that this English R&B ensemble, fronted by lead singer Sade Adu, has been touring and recording since the eighties. The release of "Soldier of Love," in 2010, marked the band's entrance into its fourth decade of offering up their smooth and melodic sound. Sade tour dates have been announced and the band is slated to appear at nearly seventy shows throughout spring and summer, 2011.
Taking the name of their lead singer and soul songstress, Sade formed in 1982 when the band members broke away from a Latin soul group and honed a jazzy R&B sound. They inked a deal with Portrait Records in 1983 and released their first album, "Diamond Life," in 1984. It was immediately successful and yielded the hits "Your Love is King" and "Smooth Operator," which are still in rotation on Adult Contemporary stations. The album was eventually certified four times platinum and the Sade concert schedule included a United Kingdom wide tour.
Sade was quick to record their sophomore set, "Promise," releasing it in1985 to positive reviews and commercial success. The band was awarded the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 1986 and went on tour to support the album. Sade tour dates were booked at several festivals that year, including the Artists Against Apartheid Concert. They released their third album, "Stronger Than Pride," in 1988 which was also certified multi-platinum by the RIAA. The band entered the nineties by releasing, "Love Deluxe," in 1992 which featured the hit, "No Ordinary Love," which won a Grammy in 1994 for Best R&B performance by a group. The band silently faded away into an extended hiatus for the rest of the nineties for undisclosed reasons.
In 2000, Sade came out of her semi-retirement and performed at the MOBO awards which fueled speculation that the band was getting back together. It proved true, and they released their comeback album, "Lovers Rock," in 2000 to immediate success. The album was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2002 and was certified multi-platinum in the United States. Sade tour dates were scheduled throughout the US and resulted in the release of a live album, "Lovers Live." Following the immense success of "Lovers Rock," they once again retired to the back-burners of the spotlight. Ten years later, they returned with a new album, "Soldier of Love," which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 selling over half a million copies in its maiden week. The band released the title track and first single to rave reviews and Sade booked performances at the Today Show and Dancing with the Stars.
Every one of their albums has been received with critical acclaim and have been awarded platinum status. They are true musicians and feature one of the best vocalists in pop music. The Sade concert schedule has the famed British band touring internationally throughout 2011. After retiring twice, we never know when they will throw in the towel for good.
