How do you measure the length of time until the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical, RENT, returns to New York? Just days. Broadway's ninth-longest-running show is experiencing a New York revival, but this time Off-Broadway. Regardless of location, critics and audiences are anxiously awaiting for RENT to return to its birthplace and home of New York City. The revival features original Broadway director Michael Grief and a whole new cast of bohemians to entertain audiences. Though creator Jonathan Larson never lived to see his masterpiece performed, he would surely be happy to see his efforts revived in 2011.

Based on Giacomo Puccini's opera, La bohème, RENT chronicles the lives of several artists, musicians, and dancers in New York City. The musical deals with characters like dancer and drug addict Mimi and musician Roger who are HIV positive, as well as drag queen Angel and philosophy professor Tom who are coping with their mortality due to AIDS. In addition to the romantic relationships between Angel and Tom and Roger and Mimi, the play also portrays the mismatched relationship between uptight lawyer Joanne and performance artist Maureen. These friends struggle to maintain the often harsh lifestyle that they hope will someday give to artistic success, while also learning that the only thing more important than that is each other.
