As a member of Simon & Garfunkel, he penned some of the most popular songs that characterized a peaceful mentality of the 60s. During his hugely successful solo career, he wrote a movie, a Broadway musical, and a number of Grammy Award-winning songs, as well as performed at some of the most popular tour dates in American history. With a career that's experienced high highs and pretty good lows, Paul Simon's currently on top with his latest album, So Beautiful or So What, which has received sparkling reviews. In honor of the album's success, Simon is currently engaged in intimate 2011 tour dates in the US and Europe.
The roots of Paul Simon's career began when he began collaborating with childhood friend Art Garfunkel in high school. Simon wrote his first song for the duo when he was thirteen and by 1957 they had a fairly successful single titled "Hey, Schoolgirl," under the moniker Tom and Jerry. In 1964, Simon & Garfunkel were signed to Columbia Records and released Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. shortly after. While the album was commercially unsuccessful, the track "Sounds of Silence" became hugely popular a year later. While the success wasn't enough for high profile tour dates, concert dates would follow after the success of albums like Sounds of Silence, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme, and the soundtrack to The Graduate. Tensions reached a breaking point on their 1970 album, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and the duo separated soon after; although Simon & Garfunkel would not be without reunion tour dates in later years.
After the breakup of Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon embarked on a hugely successful solo career. He released three hit-filled albums in the seventies, including his self-titled solo debut, There Goes Rhymin' Simon, and Still Crazy After All These Years. During a lull in his career and inspired by native African music, Simon recorded Graceland in 1986, which was a critical and commercial smash hit. The album earned Simon two Grammys and a number of hugely successful tour dates. Simon released another hit, socially conscious album in 2006 called Surprise, which dealt heavily with the events of 9/11 and the Iraq invasion.
A follow up to Surprise wouldn't come until April of 2011, when he released So Beautiful or So What, which Paul Simon has called his best album in twenty years. The bluegrass style and consistently outstanding lyrics has received acclaim from many critics; even the curmudgeonly Robert Christgau gave it an "A". In appreciation of his fans' support, Paul Simon his currently playing spring/summer 2011 tour dates in the US and Europe. On June 20, he'll began tour dates in the UK, including stops in Ireland, England, and Scotland and a concert date at the Glastonbury Festival. On July 5, Paul Simon will travel to the rest of Europe, including France, Germany, Switzerland, and a concert date at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. Paul Simon's tour dates for 2011 will end on July 21 in Tel Aviv, so be sure to buy your tickets on Eventful soon.
