Australian band Parkway Drive is spreading metal down under, and doing a good job of it. Parkway Drive is not only making a name for themselves, but a name for the music they love with hit records and widely attended concert dates. Parkway Drive has played concert dates with some of the biggest names in punk and metal, with these worldwide tour dates selling-out very quickly. With the success of their third full-length album, Deep Blue, Parkway Drive is knee deep in 2011 tour dates while promoting the album and playing the Mix N' Mash Tour in Australia.
Parkway Drive was formed in Byron Bay, Australia in 2002. The band's first recording was an EP titled Don't Close Your Eyes, which brought them fans from all across Australia and made them the go-to opening band for metal bands playing tour dates in Australia. With the success of their EP, Parkway Drive headed to the US to record their first album, Killing With a Smile. Parkway Drive scheduled dozens of tour dates to promote the album, including shows with punk bands like Anti-Flag, Senses Fail, and Taking Back Sunday. Parkway Drive was also the only Australian band to play concert dates on the 2007 Warped Tour while they worked on their second album, Horizons.
Horizons was a huge success with both fans and critics, some going as far as to insinuate that it was the next evolutionary step of metal. Parkway Drive promptly went on to promote the album with a number of concert dates, but always made time to tour Australia. On 2008's Surf Rat Tour, Parkway Drive went as far as to play tour dates in small surfing towns in Australia where most major bands don't perform. Parkway Drive continued playing concert dates around the world, and while they were out Horizons was becoming increasingly popular.
When the band set to work on their third album, Deep Blue, they intended to make their most brutal and heavy album yet. By this point, fans were waiting in frenzied anticipation for the album to release, as well as the subsequent tour dates. Within four hours of the album being released on Australian iTunes, Deep Blue had become the second highest selling album. Signs of Parkway Drive's increased popularity showed when they were asked to play dates on the 2010 No Sleep Til concert tour, with huge acts like Megadeth, NOFX, GWAR, and Atreyu.
Since the release of Deep Blue, Parkway Drive has had their schedule full of 2010 and 2011 tour dates. After finishing a US headlining tour in February and March, the new metal phenoms are embarking heading to Europe for concert dates. For May, Parkway Drive will be taking a break from their Euro tour to play The Mix N' Mash Tour, with concert dates exclusively in Australia. Parkway Drive will be joined by Australian hardcore bands You Me At Six, Bleeding Through, The Wonder Years, and Confession. They'll head back to Europe on June 9 for the remainder of the 2011 tour dates, so fans should get their tickets soon.
