Bio
Our session begins with the indulgence of solitude - whether its sunrise on the beach, or soaking in a candlelit bathtub - the goal is time alone. "Doing m' Thing" is Rhythm & Blues, live horns, and fun - 1920's Jazz Club style. "Music" follows with a breezy vibe and retro Soul message, "Music takes me to a world where I am happy, I am free"
I started singing at the age of 5 on local radio and television programs in Guyana and Trinidad. My first performance before a President, in a sold out stadium, awakened a desire. After graduating from NYU with a BA in Economics (honors), I surrendered to that desire, teaching myself to produce, and recording what Musicdish.com would call "Musical Genius" Music from "I've Been Waiting for You" premiered on Audiofile, which broadcasts on 125 radio stations around the world, and was featured at the International Fringe Festival in the 2001 Jacob A. Weiser Playwriting Award Winning Play "The Making of the Black Man."
"Someday Peace Love & Freedom" continued to nurture my budding creativity, and Mote Mgzn encouraged it saying, "Reminiscent of R&B greats Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye." Jimmy Carper of KPFT-90.1FM added, "not afraid to lay his vulnerability out there for all to see (& hear)." And the University of Calgary's Gauntlet Newspaper concluded, "alludes to Marley's former call for 'one love, one heart.'" OutMusic nominated it for Outstanding Male Album 2004 and the Fresh Fruit Festival awarded Best Male Performance. Emmy-Nominated director Bill Cote filmed "An Intimate Evening with Nhojj" DVD, and then it was back to the studio with producer Sam Archer (Barbershop, B2K) to record an Inspirational album "John Martinborough Coming home" - a dedication to my mother.
The next few years, brought honorable mentions at the 13th and 14th Annual Billboard Songwriting Contest and the #1 position on the Neo-Soul, Fusion, Nu-Jazz, Healing, Gospel and Easy listening Myspace Indie NY Music Charts.
"Soul Comfort" emerged slowly from a sense of well being. First came the bi-lingual Myspace collaboration with French/Caribbean artist Mike Ibrahim. After weeks of recording and emailing wav files between NY and Paris "Spring Rain" was born. Mike's brilliant song truly inspired me and set the tone of the entire project. I wanted to continue the celebration with a thank you note to the men who nurtured and prepared me for this life. "My Brother" features my biological brother Sam, Def Jam Poet ButtaFlySoul, Music with a Twist artist Jesse O, uni aum Entertainment founder sean, OutMusic artist baron, and producer Jon Evans.
"Dream" is my personal meditation on thoughts, goals, and gifts; and the ethereal a cappella "James Donovan" honors the lives of 2 friends with AIDS. We finish our Soul Spa session together with the universal "Peace & Blessings."
My life has been a series of ups and downs, but I wanted to celebrate the good and remind listeners to focus on the good in their lives. For me that is soul comfort - when we can, regardless of what is happening around us, say thank you and turn each day into our own private spa. Thank you for sharing my "Soul Comfort."
