If fans of modern rock have been wondering where all the rock stars are, here's a hint: They live in Canada, they're in a band called My Darkest Days, and they rock some of the hardest tour dates in North America. With only one album yet released, My Darkest Days has more of a star following than veteran bands who have played thousands of concert dates. Music lovers might know the band from their single "Porn Star Dancing", but more likely from the song's music video: Featuring the hair-flinging visage of Zakk Wylde thrashing on guitar, the vocal talents of Chad Kroeger, and members of the band surrounded by scantily clad beauties. The music video captures the essence of My Darkest Days' concert dates, which are always loud and energetic. My Darkest Days is a modern rock band that excels in catchy, high energy songs as well as slower ballads, but always with a fresh feel. Fresh off of concert dates with Hinder, My Darkest Days is currently playing tour dates in 2011 with Three Days Grace, while the popularity of their singles and videos continues to spread across the country.
My Darkest Days regularly plays a number of concert dates with Three Days Grace, as the history of the two bands is intertwined. My Darkest Days was founded by Matt Walst, younger brother of Three Days Grace bassist Brad Walst. While Matt co-wrote a portion of Three Days Grace's first album, he decided to create his own band rather than join his brother's. Thus began My Darkest Days, with it's current incarnation of Matt Walst (lead singer/guitar), Brendan McMilan (bass), Doug Oliver (drums), and Sal Costa (guitar). The band formed in Toronto in 2005 under a different line-up, but it wasn't until 2008 when they got their big break. My Darkest Days won the popular Rock Search contest, put on by a radio station in St. Catharines, Ontario, bringing them both publicity and time in a recording studio.
This publicity brought them to the attention of Canadian music guru Chad Kroeger, who was so impressed with My Darkest Days that he immediately signed them to his label, 604 Records. The first song the band wrote after being signed was "Porn Star Dancing" which has coincidently become their biggest hit. My Darkest Days' debut, self-titled album was released in September of 2010 and has become a hit with music lovers, critics, and fellow musicians like Ludacris, who was featured on a remix of "Porn Star Dancing". The album's catchy rock riffs and party themed lyrics along with energetic concert performances have brought them into the limelight, with fans anticipating the announcement of a second album.
My Darkest Days can currently be found playing tour dates in 2011 with Three Days Grace until April 14. Starting on April 16, My Darkest days will be playing some April and May 2011 tour dates with Seether, with a few sporadic concert dates in late May and late June. On July 1, My Darkest Days will be joining up with Seether again to play Boonstock tour dates in Alberta, Canada, and headlining concert dates with Seether and Hinder at the Great Jones County Fair in Monticello, Iowa. While My Darkest Days may currently be playing 2011 tour dates in support of other bands' albums, hopefully these rockstars will be headlining a tour in promotion of a new album some time soon.
