Born Taalib Johnson in Philadelphia, Musiq acquired his name after people continued to refer to him as "that music dude". A modified version of the moniker was created and Musiq Soulchild was signed to a major label deal with Def Soul in 2000. He released his debut album, Aijuswanaseign, in 2000 and buzz from the single "Just Friends (Sunny)" drove album sales to Platinum status. He released his sophomore set Juslisen in 2002, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. The set featured the singles "Halfcrazy" and "Dontchange", and yes, they are spelled like that. He released Soulstar in 2003 and took a few years of from recording. Musiq Soulchilld tour dates and concert performances were booked periodically to capitalize on the success of his #1 album.

Musiq then moved his talents to Atlantic Records to release his fourth album, Luvanmusiq, in 2007. The album featured "B.U.D.DY." and "Teachme" and was nominated for Best R&B Album at the 50th Grammy Awards.
