Keyshia Cole crafted her real lyrics on the streets of Oakland, California. She moved to LA when she was a teenager and scored a recording contract in 2004. She released her debut album, The Way It Is, in 2005 and staying true to the album's title, she connected with audiences through her tales of love, heartbreak, and betrayal. The album went on to sell 1.5 million copies and Cole embarked on the Sweatsuit Tour with Nelly to promote her debut. Cole returned in 2007 with the smash single "Let It Go", featuring Missy Elliot and Lil' Kim. The album, Just Like You, was massively successful and earned her two Grammy nominations the following year. Cole teamed up with Lil Wayne on the I Am Music Tour, which holds the record as the top-grossing hip-hop tour.

Between 2006 and 2008, Cole starred in the BET's hit reality show, Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is. The season finale was watched by nearly three million people and became the highest rated telecast in the history of BET.
