Jennifer Hudson is one of the rare American Idol contestants to crossover into critical acclaim in both the recording booth and on the big screen. The big voiced singer awed audiences with her performance in Dreamgirls and proved that she was more than a diva on the big screen, but also in real life. Jennifer Hudson tour dates are currently scheduled for a national tour throughout July, 2011.
The Chicago native was a singer on a Disney cruise when she auditioned for the third season of American Idol. She quickly gained a following, but was ultimately eliminated after appearing in the top 7. Despite losing early on in the competition, Hudson would go on to have one of the greatest careers of any contestant to appear on the show, with Los Angeles Times ranking her as the third greatest Idol contestant right behind Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
Following the show, Hudson was cast in the lead role of the Broadway adaptation, "Dreamgirls", in which she played the headstrong and talented Effie White. Her acting and singing performances in the film garnered her rave reviews. The single, "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going", reverberated through hearts and souls of audiences worldwide and her performance garnered her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. With the role of a lifetime under her belt, Hudson headed into the studio to record her debut album.
By November, 2006, Hudson had inked a deal with Arista Records under the guidance of producing legend Clive Davis. In 2008, she released her self-titled debut album and its single "Spotlight", an uptempo R&B infused track that peaked at #24 on the Hot 100. The album debuted at #2 with 217k copies sold in its maiden week giving Hudson music success in addition to her Oscar statue. As sweet as the success was, tragedy struck in Hudson's family when her mother, sister, and nephew were brutally murdered in a domestic dispute. The tragedy forced Hudson to briefly retire from the pubic eye and disrupted the promotion of her debut album. Hudson emerged in 2009 with a performance at the Super Bowl and a performance at the Grammy Awards where she won for Best R&B album. Jennifer Hudson concert dates were scheduled with Robin Thicke throughout 2009 and she even performed at Michael Jackson's memorial service.
Hudson continued to act throughout her burgeoning music career and appeared in the sequel to the Sex in City film as well as a critically acclaimed role in "The Secret Life of Bees" opposite Queen Latifah. For 2011, Hudson was cast as Winnie Mandela in the biopic of the apartheid heroine and wife of Nelson Mandela. Hudson's recording career continues to sizzle and she released her sophomore album on March 22, 2011. The lead off single "Where You At" has peaked at #10 on the R&B survey and the album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200.
In addition to her music and movie roles, Hudson has joined forces with Weight Watchers and she continues to inspire women who struggle with weight issues. Hudson also claims Oprah and Barack Obama, fellow Chicagoans, as close personal friends. Jennifer Hudson's 2011 concert schedule includes a national headlining tour in support of her sophomore album.
