“What comes forth from this newly discovered veteran band is a blissful and sometimes frightening potion of adventurous instrumentation, startlingly literate sentiments, and richly woven artisanship. Far more accessible than typical “art-rock” and yet exceedingly more intricate and melodic than most “modern rock,” Homeless J. is hovering somewhere this side of the alt-doldrums purgatory, and they have some interesting things to share with those who will listen.” [HM Magazine Feature – by John J. Thompson]

“If you've ever seen the J live, you know they are nothing but. Not satisfied with the traditional, simple midwest rock show, homeless J. always seems to have crowd-pleasing antics up their sleeve. For example, at their CD release party, they had such eye candy as corset-bathed dancing beauties during "Bra in the Window" and original music videos ornamenting the set background during the whole first set. All that being said, however, the band is like an onion, more flavorful and potent as you peel off the layers. I caught them at an unplugged show at Border's during their CD release week. Wow. Chad has the articulate grace of a seasoned band and the band has the charisma of school boys, regardless of the environment...winning over audiences by scores. At live shows, you cannot fight the absolute magnetism of homeless J. and you gain deeper understanding of the complex, romantic and poetic lyrics that are the foundation of the J.” [Melodic.net - by Louise Royce]

"... indie space rockers homeless J. got up and brought it down. Mix the gutsy muscle of early Pearl Jam with the crushing guitar swirl of Swervedriver and the moodiness of Low fronted by Jim Morrison’s alien love child. Their frontman was a robotic, sunglassed svengali, a legit with a soaring voice that simultaneously cut through and blended into a psychedelic rush of guitars and feral drumming. My faith in…indie rock bands, which was laying in a corner gasping for air, was just given an oxygen mask called homeless J.“ [CCM Magazine – Web Blog]

"With major label eyes focusing on Ft. Wayne's homeless J., they are definitely sitting in the slingshot waiting to go. The use of guitar distortion and the consistent embrace of heavy reverb on the vocals of Chad Van Meter felt like an experiment in rock...“ [IndianapolisMusic.net - by Moxy]

“…a band not willing to adhere to any particular genre or musical foundation. HOMELESS J. is by definition a band that is on their own cerebral island…. While they won’t appeal to the masses they will certainly magnetize those fans of hefty rock and roll…. ” [East Coast Romper]

    Bio
homeless J. began in 1993 when the Muse struck vocalist Chad Van Meter with a melody. The contagious song led the young 4-piece into the studio to make a demo. Something about layered guitars, airy melodies and lots of space gave them their first taste of the magic.

After college and a few other necessary distractions the band re-assembled minus one and managed to record a full-length independent album on their own. The album attracted an amazing bass player and made for a great launching point.

Within a year the new line-up had secured a production deal and within two a major label contract with MCA/Uninhibited. Two months before the album was to release MCA closed their New York offices and the album went into limbo.

The slap from fate turned out to be great for inspiration. The band in survival mode wrote enough material for a new album. Now the layered guitars and airy melodies were matched with a strong sense of rhythm and accuracy. The songs grew more poignant, the writing cathartic.

Soon the production company that originally signed the band started a label (Selectric Records). Homeless J. was the first act signed. With distribution from Sony RED it was time to release the album recorded originally for MCA. On May 2 of 06 the album was released nationally. Only hours before the release, unfortunately, the financial bottom had dropped out of the new label.

Once again new material and this time a new drummer would lead to a creative boom. The band is currently recording their next album.

Some 13 years later it continues to be about the magic and alchemy of layered guitars, soaring vocals, and serious groove. Despite the frustrations of the music business, the art of music flourishes.
