A rapper who built an indie empire with his Cocaine City imprint, French Montana is the New American Dream. French grew up playing soccer and dreaming of being a rapper, studying some of the biggest names in the game such as Tupac, Snoop Dogg, The Notorious B.I.G. and Wu-Tang Clan. Today, French is signed with some of the top labels, such as Interscope, Bad Boy, and Maybach Music Group.
Born in Morocco as Karim Kharbouch to a family of Somali heritage, he emigrated to the U.S. when he was 13. His father left the family when he was 17, forcing him to provide for his mother and younger brothers. He set up shop in the Bronx and began releasing his Cocaine City series of DVDs in 2002, mixing interviews with established hip-hop artists and unsigned talent. During this time Karim became French Montana, a combination of the French influence in Morocco and Scarface’s Tony Montana. Through these DVDs he showcased his talent as an underground artist and a new voice from the New York streets.
In early 2009, he began releasing his own mixtape CDs with DJs like DJ Drama, Evil Empire and Big Mike as his hosts. His friendship and frequent collaborations with Harlem rapper Mike B created a buzz for his work that still continues today. In 2009 he signed with Akon’s Konvict Musik label. However, in 2011 French and Konvict parted due to album delays and he signed with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group and Bad Boy Records.
2011 brought on collaborations with artists such as Waka Flocka Flame and Pusha T. But it looks like 2012 will be French Montana’s year, especially with the release of his new album Excuse My French and numerous collaborations with artists such as Drake, Gucci Mane, Project Pat, Fabolous, Jadakiss, Busta Rhymes, 2 Chainz and Wiz Khalifa, to name a few.
French Montana only has a few tour dates left in 2012. Don’t miss out; who knows how much time he’ll have for shows once he’s finished working with just about every big name in the rap world. Is your city missing from his schedule? Make sure to demand him and let him know he’s wanted in your hometown.
