Founded in 1989 in Naucalpan, Mexico, Café Tacvba mixes influences from indigenous folk traditions, Jarocho, and electro punk to form a style known to their fans as Rock en Español. The band has managed to maintain their original lineup, with Rubén Ortega on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Emmanuel “Meme” del Real Díaz on keyboards, Jose “Joselo” Arroyo on lead guitar, and Enrique “Quique” Arroyo on bass. The group is regularly joined by Mexican folk music player, Alejandro Flores on the violin, and Luis “El Children” Ledezma on drums.
The group’s debut album, Café Tacvba, was released in 1992 and instantly became hugely popular in Mexico. The album experimented with many musical styles, from ska and punk to electronic and bolero. Their follow-up album, Re, was released with singles such as “La Ingrata” and “El Ciclón” that achieved commercial success. Their fourth and fifth album, Réves/Yo Soy and Cuatro Caminos, won the Grammy for best Latin Rock Album in 1999 and 2003 respectively. Sino(2007) won two Latin Grammies in 2008, one for Best Rock Song and one for Best Alternative Song.
The group has only one show scheduled in 2012. Want more from Café Tacvba? Make sure to demand them to let them know they’re wanted in your home city!
