      Scenic Highway Community Event

Did you know that East Pensacola Heights is the oldest neighborhood in America? Seriously, Pensacola has at last been proven to be the oldest European settlement in the United States. And it all started in the East Pensacola Heights area in 1559.
The Scenic Highway Foundation will host a community event Tuesday, October 24 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. at the East Pensacola Heights Clubhouse, 3208 East Gonzalez St. On hand to provide an update on the Gaberonne Swamp stormwater enhancements will be Brad Hinote from the City of Pensacola Public Works Department.
Come and meet Tom Garner, a research assistant at the University of West Florida and native Pensacolian. As the neighborhood liaison for the Luna settlement archaeology project, Tom works to keep the neighbors informed since so many of them have offered UWF access to their private properties for the field school dig. He will talk about the scope of the settlement (five football fields long!), evidence of building footings, and some of the artifacts found there.
The event is free and open to the public. Exhibits and refreshments will be available at 5:30 p.m., and the program will begin at 6:00.
