      Upper Palouse Falls

We will hike from Palouse Falls State Park, dropping down onto the railroad bed and hike for a mile plus over railroad ties. We veer to the left off the tracks walking on cattle trails along side the Palouse River. By this time of year there may be some flowers out, birds floating around and hopefully no cattle or snakes. This hike is hard on the feet and ankles from walking on railroad ties and rock and on the side of the hill for a couple of miles going out and returning, elevation gain is insignificant. The payoff is whatever we might see in the way of wildlife, plants and especially the water carved volcanic walls. Plan to eat lunch at the Upper Falls and bring extra clothing as the weather demands. Bring the ten essentials and anything else to keep your feet comfortable. The hike is about nine miles so bring enough water too. A moderate to strenuous hike to waterfalls near Kahlotus. The hike is designated as a DH-2/3 Day Hike 2 - Moderate - 6 to 10 miles or 1000 to 2000-foot elevation gain per day; 3 - Strenuous - 10 to 12 miles or 2000 to 3000-foot elevation gain per day.
