Description
6:30 PM - 9:00 PM October 7, 2008 Cubberley 4000 Middlefield Rd., RM H-1 Palo Alto, , CA 94105 Scala fuses object-oriented and functional programming concepts into an elegant, statically typed programming language for the Java Platform. The name Scala stands for "SCAlable LAnguage." It is scalable in the sense that it is designed to be useful in a wide range of tasks, scaling up to very large programs written by many people and down to short scripts written by individuals. The conciseness and expressiveness of Scala gives it the feel of dynamic languages such as Python or Ruby, but Scala also provides a rich static type system that can help programmers prevent errors. In this talk, Bill Venners will give an introduction and overview of the Scala programming language.

Speaker Bio
Bill Venners is president of Artima, Inc., publisher of Artima Developer (www.artima.com). His popular columns in JavaWorld magazine covered Java internals, object-oriented design, and Jini. Active in the Jini Community since its inception, Bill led the Jini Community's ServiceUI project, whose ServiceUI API became the de facto standard way to associate user interfaces to Jini services. Bill is also the lead developer and designer of ScalaTest, an open source testing tool for Scala and Java developers, and coauthor with Martin Odersky and Lex Spoon of the book, Programming in Scala.
