Event details: La Fanciulla del West
Description
The Girl of the Golden West -- Amongst the 20,000 operas written during the past 400 years there are not many that have a whiff of gunpowder. Giacomo Puccini's La Fanciulla del West is the exception. When Puccini was to write a new piece for the Metropolitan Opera in 1910 he used the American myth of the Wild West as his point of departure. The story is set in a gold rush town in California, around 1850. The only woman in the heavily male-dominated society is saloon owner Minnie. Great unrest surfaces when news that the bandit Ramerrez and his gang are ravaging the area. He turns up at the saloon, incognito as Dick Johnson. Dick/Ramerrez and Minnie have previously had an affair, and feelings are rekindled. No one knows that Dick really is the man everyone is looking for. Least of all Sheriff Jack Rance, who also has strong feelings for Minnie.
