Description
Host Club: Chesapeake Bay Country Wanderers
Distance and Trail Rating: 5/10 Km 1+
Start Point Address / Driving Directions:
Piney Orchard Shopping Center, 8749 Piney Orchard Parkway, Odenton, Md 21113. Phone 410-695-2400. Directions: From I-95 North or South, take Exit 38 (Ft. Meade), MD 32 East. Follow MD 32 approximately 5 miles to the Route 175 (Odenton) exit. Bear RIGHT and at the third traffic light, Route 170/Piney Orchard Parkway, turn RIGHT. Follow the parkway 1.8 miles south, past two traffic lights. At the roundabout, go 3/4 of the way around, turn RIGHT, and enter the Marketplace shopping center. Take the first RIGHT and the BP station will be immediately on your right. Please do not park directly in front of the station, but use the larger lot on your left. Walk across the service road and enter the building. Ask the cashier, on the right, for the Walkbox. Event Description: For the 10 kmk trail, walk during daylight hours only. The residential areas are lighted, but the Nature Preserve is not. The trail is rated 1+, suitable for large-wheel strollers, but not wheelchairs. Pets must be leashed at all times. This is a pleasant walk in any season, on both paved sidewalks/trails and unpaved woodland paths that should be quite passable even in wet weather. The route winds through Piney Orchard, including its Nature Preserve renowned for its many bird species and other wildlife, such as beaver, foxes, and deer. Mosquito and tick repellent is advised during summer months. The 5K route is all on paved sidewalks or blacktop trails, with one short but possibly steep hill, and does not enter the Nature Preserve. It is an entirely different trail from the 10K. The gas station is open 24 hours a day and sells subs, snacks, and soft drinks.
Start Times: SP is open 24/7. Walk during daylight hours only.
