Description
THIS AWESOME HIKE, in the most remote section of Mt. Tamalpais, is reserved for CONDITIONED hikers wanting a STRENUOUS day of spectacular hiking! This hike offers intimacy with Mount Tam's largest lake (Alpine Lake) and then climbs in a mixed forest to a series of cascades (Cataract Falls) that charge down a rocky and wooded canyon. Comprised of a mix of open grassland, steep canyons, and hardwood forests, Mount Tamalpais is home to an impressive twelve species of oaks, including hybrids. We'll pass by several of these along this varied walk in wild woods. Farther on, visit a famous outdoor theater and a historic old inn before gawking at unsurpassed views of S.F. Bay and San Pablo Bay from atop East Peak! HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: Views of Alpine, Lagunitas & Bon Tempe Lakes; Cataract Trail with striking views of Cataract Falls; Trails passing High Marsh, Willow & Azalea Meadows, Hidden Lake and More! HIKE DETAILS: Start time: 9 A.M. Distance: 13 Miles Elevation: 2300+ft. Difficulty: VERY STRENUOUS due to DISTANCE/ELEVATION GAINS. Hike Time: 6+ Hrs. Parking Fee: None Dogs: Sorry, Not Allowed on this hike. Guests: Members only. WHAT TO BRING: Sturdy hiking boots/shoes, day-pack, water, camera, snacks, fleece, jacket. Cold weather gear (rain/wind protection), gloves, hat. Cataract Falls Photo Bay Area Hiker Related Info Google Map DIRECTIONS: Take Hwy #101 to San Rafael, and take the Sir Francis Drake Blvd. exit. Drive 7.8 miles to Alpine Lake, and park at the hairpin turn just after crossing the dam. Parking is limited, find a parking spot somewhere off the narrow road, in the pullouts along the turn. The trailhead is on the left at the hairpin turn. Lat/Long: 37.93242N, 122.63392W PLEASE NOTE: The 7.8 miles on Fairfax/Bolinas Rd. is slow and winding, make sure to give yourself plenty of time to arrive on time and find roadside parking.
