Event details: Kalil Wilson & the Dan Marschak Trio
Description
Oakland native Kalil Wilson makes his Yoshi’s debut with a night of
creative arrangements, soul-inspired standards, and fresh originals.
Expertly capable in both the classical and jazz idioms, Wilson has
sung on a wide variety of stages, from the Metropolitan Opera in New
York to Walt Disney Hall, The Getty Center, and the premiere jazz
venues of Los Angeles. He has performed many lead tenor roles and
oratorio with the Los Angeles Opera, Los Angeles Philharmonic
Orchestra, Aspen Music Festival, Oakland East Bay Symphony, California
Philharmonic Orchestra, Mendocino Music Festival, Opera UCLA, and the
U.C. Berkeley and UCLA Symphony orchestras. A recent magna cum laude
graduate of the Vocal Music and Ethnomusicology Departments at UCLA,
where he was a Gluck Foundation fellow, Wilson received early training
at the U.C. Berkeley Young Musicians Program and the Oakland Youth
Chorus. Wilson's debut recording, "Easy to Love," is being played on
radio stations across the world, including KCSM and KJAZZ in Los
Angeles.
Wilson’s long-time pianist, musical director, and fellow Oakland
native Dan Marschak will bring his compositional and pianistic talent
to the stage with brand new originals and arrangements. Marschak is a
recent graduate of UCLA’s Composition and Jazz Studies departments,
and under the tutelage of Kenny Burrell, Paul Chihara, Susan
Muscarella, and James Newton is a rising player in both the Los
Angeles and Bay Area scenes. Bassist Tommy Folen, drummer Julian
Hogan, and saxophonist Peter Hargreaves will round out the band for an
intimate and memorable performance
