Rock City Nottingham opened in December 1980, and, mostly because of its ability to book bands right on the verge of super stardom, soon established itself as the alternative music venue for the East Midlands. In terms of the success achieved and popularity reached by Rock City Nottingham, particularly in the 80s, the venue's club nights were arguably even more instrumental than the live music gigs themselves. With different nights dedicated to specific themes (rock, funk 'n' soul and the still-existing student nights and 'Love Shack'), Rock City Nottingham had something for everyone - an all-inclusiveness which continues to this day.
In the last thirty years, Rock City Nottingham has played host to many of the biggest names in music; U2, The Pogues, Public Enemy, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, David Bowie, Megadeth and The Killers, Death Cab for Cutie, Lily Allen, Kasabian, Arctic Monkeys and Muse are just a few of those featured on the Rock City schedule in the past. The venue has played a major part in putting Nottingham on the map as one of the UK's best cities for live music.
