Description
The Museum of Arts & Design displays handmade objects whose initial purpose was functional, but which now transcend practical use through their innate artistic value and what they tell us about design in American life. Many of the objects here are familiar—baskets, wooden furniture, quilts, tableware, vessels, clothing, teapots—but their history all too often goes unremarked upon. Though it focuses largely on 20th-century American crafts, the museum collects objects from all periods. Exhibits have included The History of 20th-century American Craft; an examination of the work of African-American, Appalachian, Hispanic and Indian crafts during the Depression and World War II: Revivals! Diverse Traditions: 1920-1945; and Craft in the Machine Age: 1920-1945, of special interest since it addressed what was seen by many craftsmen as a direct threat to their livelihood: mass production. There are regular lectures, workshops, as well as symposia and gallery tours.
