Remembering Lady Day -- 50 Years

The title of our program is Remembering Lady Day-- 50 years. We are nearing the end of 2009. This special concert is a tribute to the great vocalist who sang to us all with equal compassion and intimacy: Billie Holiday (1915-1959).

This concert was originally conceived by a festival promoter, Maria Alice Martins, in the remote town of Ouro Preto, deep in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Ms. Martins invited Madeleine Peyroux, as well as many of those who will appear at the Blue Note this December 4-6, including musical arranger Oded Lev-Ari, to perform in a special entitled Fifty Years Without Billie Holiday, earlier this year.

As the idea for this project grew, it became clear that Billie had influenced us all, vocalists and musicians alike, each in our own way. Therefore, the show we are presenting is more a collaborative effort of all musicians and vocalists who will appear, in the spirit of how each was influenced by the great jazz and blues vocalist.

We hope that you will join us in our celebration this weekend, and find a little bit of Billie in you.

More about Blue Note
Blue Note
Regarding the Jazz scene in New York City, one of the Blue Note s managers matter of factly told us This is it. Indeed, the Blue Note is arguably the world s most popular jazz club. Although the club only opened their doors in the early 80 s, it has the feel of a longtime veteran in the New York Jazz scene. Once you get over the commercial feel of the joint, including its gold plaque embedded tables, mediocre meals named after jazz songs, and overpriced gift shop, the Blue Note is truly among the best of its kind. Expect to see world renowned talent on any given day except for Mondays, which is reserved for exceptional local talent. Show times are 9 00 and 11 30 during the week and additional Sunday matinees at 1 00 PM and 3 30 PM. Check the schedule link for show details.
