Description
So, we've all seen the rash of musical biopics: Walk the Line, Ray, Edith Piaf, etc. Now, get ready to see real interviews of a real musician and the real people who really knew her (really). Ms. O'Day was almost 90 years old when the movie was shot, and she would die a year later. The Boston Globe said of the movie, "Gimmicks and hyperbole aren't necessary, so long as there's O'Day's beaming face to look at -- radiant when young, radiant and wrinkled when old -- and the sound of that sloe-gin voice to savor." All this radiance, though she lived a tough, tough life, with a mental breakdown, a rape, numerous abortions, a 14-year addiction to heroin and time in jail. Plus, there's music too. There's rare and never before seen vintage performances and interviews with vocalists Annie Ross and Margaret Whiting, Jazz Impresario George Wein, and award winning arrangers Bill Holman, Johnny Mandel, Russel Garcia & Buddy Bregman. A life story, music, other Culture Vultures: what more could you possibly want on a Saturday?
