Apex Art

Apex Art seeks to improve understanding of the art of our time through the presentation and interpretation of challenging, innovative exhibitions. Located in Lower Manhattan, Apex Art operates a gallery, a varied series of public programs and a residency program for artists.

Significant past exhibitions have included Peepers, focusing on America's new culture of surveillance; Building the Unthinkable, a group show about the contemporary artistic and architectural response to the nuclear proliferation; Place for the Self, which addressed concepts of memory, consciousness and identity in existential reflections; and A Certain Tendency (In Curating), which looked at developments in curatorial practice through the an examination of François Truffaut's A Certain Tendency in French Cinema, an essay which introduced the auteur theory.

Since opening in 1994, Apex Art has featured hundreds of artists in more than 100 exhibitions. Each year there are nine group exhibits, six to eight residencies (a one-month stay in New York) and at least 50 public lectures and performances. Vito Acconci, Martha Rosler, Dave Hickey, John Baldessari, Hou Hanru, Ute Meta Bauer, David Byrne, Janine Antoni, Kerry James Marshall, Jean-Hubert Martin are but some of the individuals who have shown or spoken at Apex Art.
