Event details: 2009 American Watercolor Society International Exhibition
Description
Each year since 1866, the American Watercolor Society (AWS) has hosted a juried exhibition of exemplary watercolors by artist members of the organization. The Societyâs 142nd traveling exhibition, selected from a large New York show, features 40 artists from throughout the United States and Canada.
The founding members of AWS joined forces shortly after the end of the Civil War to promote the art of watercolor painting which previously had been viewed as purely a sketching medium. The organization boasts such past members as Winslow Homer, Childe Hassam, J.G. Brown, John LaFarge and Andrew Wyeth.
Portraits, cityscapes, still life paintings, as well as abstract works, are featured to demonstrate the fine detail and depth of color that can be rendered in this challenging and striking medium.
