Bookish Roundtable to discuss "Science Fiction"

Love to read and discuss books with others but don't want the pressure of finishing a particular book in time for a book discussion? This meetup is for you. We won't discuss one specific book at this meetup. We're encouraging members to read and be ready to discuss a a book of science fiction to prepare for this meetup. We're reading science fiction to look at how using our imaginations to create other worlds can give us a different perspective on the world...and help us imagine how we want or don't want the future (or the past) to be. For some ideas/examples, the book of science fiction could be a classic (Robert Heinlein), the basis of TV series (Charlaine Harris), Robert Jordan, books expanding on the Star Trek franchise, and so forth. I heard a review of Max Brooks' "World War Z" that was pretty intriguing. I am reading a collection of Philip K. Dick stories. A couple of his stories have been made into movies (e.g. Minority Report). We'll discuss such topics as what are the ingredients of good science fiction, why read science fiction, and share recommendations with each other. I have uploaded to the "files" section a speech by science fiction author and UCI professor Gregory Benford on why red and write science fiction. The meeting will be in a private residence near the 405/55/73 intersection. Since the meeting is during dinnertime, please bring a favorite main dish, side dish, dessert, or drink to share.
