Melody and magic meet in Loyola University New Orleans Opera Theatre’s presentation of Donizetti’s comic opera, “The Elixir of Love.” Stage director David Morelock and music director Carol Rausch will lead the cast and live orchestra in two performances on Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m., and Feb. 1, at 3 p.m., in Roussel Performance Hall located in the Communications/Music Complex on the corner of Calhoun Street and St. Charles Avenue.

Set in the early nineteenth century, “The Elixir of Love” involves Nemorino, a love-struck peasant, who swoons at the sight of Adina, a beautiful and wealthy landowner. When a traveling salesman offers a bottle of wine masquerading it as an enchanted love potion, Nemorino spends his life savings to unlock its power, only to find that courage, not love, can be found in a bottle and only true love enchants without magical devices.

Cast members include Casey J. Candébat (Saturday) and Michael Davidson (Sunday) playing Nemorino; Jayme Hogan-Yarbro (Saturday) and Maria Elena Altany (Sunday) playing Adina; Jake Penick (Saturday) and David Castillo (Sunday) playing Sergeant Belcore; Sara Kelly (Saturday) and Lauren Berman (Sunday) playing Giannetta; and Loyola alumnus Ken Weber playing Dr. Dulcamara.

The performance will serve as Morelock’s final major production with Loyola. He will retire this spring after serving 13 years as director of opera workshop.
