Flock’s next production is of Doubt: A Parable by John Patrick Shanley, slated to run in the Thames Club April 4th to April 14th, Thursdays through Sundays, with most shows beginning at 7 PM. Information on special presentations will be publicized through Flock’s website and Facebook page. Doubt, winner of both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play, is set in a fictional Bronx Catholic school in the 60s. The school’s principal, Sister Aloysius, is trying to navigate whether or not sexual misconduct may be occuring between the parish priest, Father Flynn, and the school’s first African American student. Sister James, a naive and impressionable young nun, does not know who to believe as Flynn and Aloysius confront each other. Director Derron Wood was inspired to produce Doubt partly due to John Patrick Shanley’s preface, containing timely societal commentary: “We are living in a courtroom culture. We were living in a celebrity culture, but that’s dead. Now we’re only interested in celebrities if they’re in court. We are living in a culture of extreme advocacy, of confrontation, of judgment, and of verdict. Discussion has given way to debate. Communication has become a contest of wills. Public talking has become obnoxious and insincere. Why? Maybe it’s because deep down under the chatter we have come to a place where we know that we don’t know… anything. But nobody’s willing to say that.” Flock Theatre is internationally renowned for their intimate, small-audience theatre presentations, known for their monumental production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night in the Monte Cristo Cottage. The Thames Club’s beautiful antiquity naturally sets Doubt in the interior of the fictional St. Nicholas Church School, providing the small audience with a sense of immersion as the four actors seamlessly transfer from scene to scene around them. The performance is in one act and will run for approximately 90 minutes. Please follow Flock Theatre on Instagram and Facebook to remain up to date on upcoming events.
