Rich in history, resplendent in architectural beauty, brimming with arts, culture, and recreation, Newburyport is a gem. Incorporated in 1635, Newburyport grew to be one of the major shipbuilding and commerical centers on the East Coast, and home to many sea captains and statesmen in colonial times. In the 1970's, it underwent extensive downtown restoration which has brought its beauty and historic charm to the forefront. There is history in abundance from the museums, both maritime and historical, to the outstanding federalist style mansions.
