1st Annual ELDERS FOR TODAY CONFERENCE -- Memories, Dreams and Reality: The Civil Rights Movement 1960-2010 at Vanderbilt University

Location: Scarritt-Bennett Center
Contact: Becca Stinson

More than 50 years ago, a great movement to advance civil rights took hold of America and changed the lives of many people. But what is the lasting impact of the Civil Rights Movement on communities and individuals today?

Scarritt-Bennett Center will host the first annual Elders for Today Conference January 5-8, 2010. This educational conference will bring together people who experienced the Civil Rights era of the 1960s and those interested in learning about the era, and engage them in interactive conversations and activities addressing civil rights and social justice issues past and present.

The conference will provide participants with a historical perspective of the movement, using Nashville's Civil Rights history as a spring-board; will engage participants in a variety of creative methods of sharing individual memories and experiences including music, writing, technology and art; and will encourage participants to explore how the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s continues to impact America today, and what it might mean for tomorrow.
