Lohin Geduld Gallery is proud to present our first exhibition of landscape paintings by Albert Kresch.
The buzz about the merits of Albert Kresch’s work has been going on for decades. He was a student of Hans Hofmann, and a member of the influential circle of artists that formed around the Jane Street Gallery. These artists, including Leland Bell, Louisa Matthiasdottir, Nell Blaine and Larry Rivers, eschewed the prevailing abstract impulses of the day to forge a figurative movement whose roots were founded in European Modernism.
Kresch has been dubbed a “painter’s painter,” meaning that his work displays intrinsic strengths valued by artists. However, he is also a populist artist who delivers pleasure and satisfaction with each picture. Despite their diminutive size, his landscapes stretch out far and wide, pulsating with color, joy and mystery.
Kresch overlays saturated colors on muted grounds, creating surges of space and emotion. Not unlike the stained-glass-inspired Georges Rouault, Kresch conjures up the fleeting moments of the magic hour when light, color and atmosphere take on a poetic resonance.
The inspiration for Kresch’s landscapes varies widely, from the foothills of the Catskills to the Sangre de Cristo mountain range of New Mexico and Colorado. In each painting he creates a concentrated experience that goes beyond mere description of locale. Clouds drift overhead as houses huddle in a valley. Dancing figures cavort through the fields, conveying a sense of timeless romance. Layers of paint metaphorically speak of accumulated history. These evocative meditations on landscape dazzle the senses and show Albert Kresch to be an artist at the top of his game.
Albert Kresch’s early studies were with Hans Hofmann and he later received a M.A. from New York University. He has had solo exhibitions at Salander-O’Reilly Galleries, NY; Center for Figurative Painting, NY; Jane Street Gallery, NY; Cornell University, NY; and Contemporary Realist Gallery, CA. His work has been in numerous group exhibitions including at Lori Bookstein Gallery, NY; The New York Studio School, NY; Prince Street Gallery, NY; Tibor de Nagy Gallery, NY; The Fashion Institute of Technology, NY; Kansas City Art Institute, MO; and Artists’ Choice Museum, NY. Kresch’s work has been reviewed in The New York Times, The New York Sun, The New York Observer, The Financial Times, Art & Antiques, The Washington Post as well as in numerous other publications.
Albert Kresch has a studio in Brooklyn, NY and draws inspiration from his stays in various locales.
