Description
Let's go to the Tarrytown Music Hall on Thursday Nov 12th at 8pm to get our funk and soul groove on seeing lifetime Grammy Award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Mavis Staples -- a gospel and soul music legend. Rolling Stone named her one of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. From the start of her career with the groundbreaking gospel/soul group the Staple Singers to her work with Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, The Band, Santana, David Byrne, Prince, and Bob Dylan (to name a very few), Staples has been one of the great voices in pop music. Her 2007 Ry Cooder produced album We'll Never Turn Back was an inspiring and passionately performed collection of songs from the Civil Rights era. Check out her music -- here and here (although the video isn't very good) plus one more -- here. You can also wander around Utube and listen to more of her music.. many others have covered her classic tunes.. We can get balcony seats for this show at $35 each, plus $3 ticket fee, plus $1.20 paypal fee, plus my $1.00 fee -- please send $40.00 via paypal so I can buy a block of tickets.. I purchased three tix in left Balcony, Row D, seats 101, 103, and 105, if you still want to go, get your own tix at the Tarrytown Music Hall's website. Here's the site: http://tickets.tarrytownmusichall.org/ Mavis Staples began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches and appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples scored a hit in 1956 with "Uncloudy Day" for the Vee-Jay label. When Mavis graduated from high school in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck "Pops" Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleo, Yvonne, and Pervis, the Staples were called "God's Greatest Hitmakers." With Mavis' voice and Pops' songs, singing, and guitar playing, the Staples evolved from enormously popular gospel singers (with recordings on United and Riverside as well as Vee-Jay) to become the most spectacular and influential spirituality-based group in America. By the mid-1960s The Staple Singers, inspired by Pops' close friendship with Martin Luther King, Jr., became the spiritual and musical voices of the civil rights movement. They covered contemporary pop hits with positive messages, including Bob Dylan's "A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall" and a version of Stephen Stills' "For What It's Worth."
