Description
Let's go to the New York Hall of Science to enjoy a great concert featuring fun and quirky musicians singing about science! :) They Might Be Giants (TMBG) is an extraordinary popular music group built around the songwriters John Flansburgh and John Linnell. They have a cross generational appeal, from fans who discovered them at CBGB's in the 1980's to preschoolers who loved their 2005 Grammy Award winning Here Come the 123's. Their songs are quirky, melodic, unmistakably TMBG; their biggest hit over the past decade or so is a song called "Istanbul (not Constantinople)" which reminds the listener that the historical capital is called...Istanbul not Constantinople. They also do idiosyncratic, naive-looking videos for many of their songs like this one " http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=52638666" Their most recent DVD, combining new music and new videos, is called Here Comes Science. The list of songs demonstrates the premise of the recording, that "Science is Real." Songs on this most recent dvd include: Science Is Real; Meet The Elements; I Am A Paleontologist; The Bloodmobile; Electric Car (with Robin Goldwasser); My Brother The Ape; What Is A Shooting Star?; How Many Planets?; Why Does The Sun Shine?; Why Does The Sun Really Shine? ;Roy G. Biv; Put It To The Test; Photosynthesis; Cells; Speed And Velocity (by Marty Beller); Computer Assisted Design; Solid Liquid Gas; Here Comes Science; The Ballad Of Davy Crockett (In Outer Space). You can see some of the videos on youtube, starting here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ty33v7UYYbw&feature=player_embedded About a year ago, TMBG realized that they needed to fact check this record, as they had no background in science. Through a series of connections, they contacted a staffer at NYSCI who agreed to sign on as the first rock n roll fact checker in history. They swore this individual to secrecy, but s/he managed to ask innocent questions of the Hall's education and science staff when s/he was unsure of the accurate answer. Staff helped with "Why Does the Sun Really Shine" (also known as The Sun is a Miasma of Incandescent Plasma.) And with The Bloodmobile; Speed and Velocity, and the whole education staff discussed Solid Liquid Gas. But none of them knew that they were contributing to such a significant recording. To thank NYSCI for their help, TMBG is playing two benefit concerts at the Hall of Science on December 13, at 1:00 and 3:15. So.. here's a great chance to see this fun and quirky group in a small (300 seats) intimate environment...and also have some time to let your inner geek enjoy the exhibits at the science museum! Children are welcome... Tix are $35 and can be purchased at www.nysci.org and include admission to the Hall. Please note: We are going to the 3:15 show... questions? Comments? Please email me.. Cheers! Terry
