Political Participation is not Spontaneous. DWMC luncheon highlights Dr. Springer

Dr. Melanie J. Springer, Associate Professor of Politics at the University of California in Santa Cruz will discuss voter turnout and various factors that encourage or hinder political participation, such as mobilization and voting rights. The public is welcome to attend.

Dr. Springer’s academic interests center on American Politics and on understanding the historical evolution of voting and elections. She studies the ways electoral and political institutions influence opportunities for political participation, including federalism’s role in shaping past and recent policy-making in the American states, the impact of Southern politics, and the ever-changing universe of parties and partisanship in the United States.

Her most recent book How the States Shaped the Nation: American Electoral Institutions and Voter Turnout, 1920-2000 (University of Chicago Press, 2014) examines the effect that numerous state-level electoral institutions have had on 20th century voter turnout rates in the American states. It highlights efforts to limit the vote alongside reforms geared toward fostering inclusiveness. At its core, this book examines the fluidity of political participation – a concept central to the definition of American democracy – while seriously considering the importance of space and time.
