Motivational speaker and coach Bill McGill, a 1981 graduate of Modesto High School, is returning from a successful presentation on Preventing Drug and Alcohol Abuse for Parents and Youth at The State Theatre, and this time his topic is Fear: how to recognize it, and how to overcome it. His presentations always carry an underlying message on the importance of building self-esteem and self-worth for youth, particularly those who are at-risk. No stranger to adversity, McGill knows his subject well, and frequently reaches out to the community through Team-McGill, a local non-profit organization established to insure that all youth at risk get a fair chance to maximize educational opportunities and lead productive, successful lives. The organization's core message focuses on the importance of educating youngsters on the perils of drug and alcohol abuse and how easily one can fall into the trap of addiction. His team provides a support structure to help at-risk youth overcome socio-economic and environmental disadvantages.
Doors at 5:30 p.m.; presentation at 6:30 p.m.
General admission tickets are $10
From the directors of wildly successful indie Little Miss Sunshine comes this comedy about Calvin (Paul Dano), a young novelist who achieved phenomenal success early in his career but is now struggling with his writing. Calvin isn't particularly successful in his romantic life, either. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him. When Calvin finds Ruby (Zoe Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person. Ruby is literally out of his mind! "Don't look for sweet and embraceable. Also starring Annette Bening, Antonia Banderas and Elliott Gould.
"This movie is not afraid to show its claws. Like the spirited teamwork of Kazan and Dano, Ruby Sparks is honest, deep and true." -- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "Ruby Sparks doesn't try to pretend to be more than it is: a sleek, beautifully written and acted romantic comedy that glides down to earth in a gently satisfying soft landing." -- Stephen Holden, The New York Times
