A rare reading by novelist Denis Johnson, the author of Tree of Smoke, a 2007 novel about the Vietnam War which won the National Book Award. He wrote the short story collection Jesus' Son, which the Los Angeles Times called "one of the masterpieces of American fiction in the last 20 years": a movie of the book, starring Billy Crudup, was named one of the top ten films of 1999 by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Roger Ebert. His latest Train Dreams, a 2002 novella finally published as a book in 2011 (Farrar Straus & Giroux), was named a 2011 top ten novel by NPR, a 2011 top ten book by the Economist, a notable book of 2011 by the New York Times, and a book of the year by Publishers Weekly. He lives in Arizona and Idaho. Presented by the Department of English at the University of Minnesota: english.umn.edu
