Description
Stage Sisters (dir. Xie Jin, 112 min, 1965) uses the Shaoxing opera to stand in as a metaphor for the history of China in the twentieth century, and juxtaposes the lives of two opera actresses who go on separate paths for money and politics. Chunhua (Xie Fang), a peasant girl escaping from abusive in-laws, joins an opera troop and befriends Yuehong (Cao Yindi), the daughter of the group's manager. Later moving to Shanghai, the two friends become emblematic of larger conflicts in Chinese society as Yuehong becomes enamored of the materialistic lifestyle of their new setting and Chunhua finds herself attracted to communist party doctrine.
