Description
Red Detachment of Women (dir. Pan Wenzhan, et al, 120 min, 1970) is based on the true story of the all-female Special Company of the 2nd Independent Division of Chinese Red Army, first formed in May, 1931. The film depicts the liberation of a Wu Qinghua, a peasant girl on Hainan Island imprisoned by her cruel landlord but rescued by Hong Changqing, a Red Army commander who recruits her into his fighting force and encourages her to leave her personal grudges behind in order to fight for the greater good.

Based on a novel and later adapted as a ballet, Red Detachment of Women became one of the eight model performances of the Cultural Revolution, most famous for its presentation, as a ballet, to Richard Nixon on his visit to China in 1972.
