Heritage Series: The 1937 Attempted Robbery of Chemical Bank

One of the most researched topics in Midland’s history is also the topic of our next Heritage Series Program. Though the event occurred more than 80 years ago, the attempted robbery of the Chemical Bank on September 29, 1937 continues to fascinate people in Midland and throughout the nation, due to its unique circumstances and its long-term impact.

Join us at the Doan History Center to learn the details of this tragic event as local historian and Delta College History Professor John Mulloy describes the events leading up to the attempted robbery, the frenzied moments on the fateful Wednesday in downtown Midland, and its aftermath. John has researched the topic thoroughly, and will share some of his little-known information with us.

The attempted robbery took place during late morning, when two gunmen—Jack Gracy and Anthony Chebatoris—entered Chemical Bank to pull off an “easy heist in a sleepy town.” Both men were unaware Midland had been preparing for such a robbery during the Great Depression, as the cash payroll of The Dow Chemical Company was always a concern for the local Sheriff. Their actions were stopped by Bank President Clarence Macomber and by deputized Dr. Herbert Hardy, whose dental office was located upstairs next to the bank.

By the end of the day, Gracy was shot dead, Chebatoris was wounded and captured, innocent bystander Henry Porter was shot and would eventually die from his wounds, and Dr. Hardy was an unwilling hero. Immediately, Midland and its attempted bank robbery was front page news across America.
