      Working with treatment resistant clients is always challenging. Motivational Interviewing and Mindfulness Practices can help client’s breakthrough the barrier of “chronic contemplation”. This presentation will focus on the evidence-based approach of Motivational Interviewing as a way to help clients develop a personal motivation for and a commitment to living a life in recovery. Learning Objectives: Participants will learn about the stages and process of change and how to move clients along the continuum Participants will gain an understanding of how the spirit and method of Motivational Interviewing complement one another in facilitating behavioral change. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of values clarification and ways to evoke a client’s own motivation to change Participants will learn Mindfulness Practices that can be used alongside of MI to help clients remain in long-term recovery. John Shields, MHS, CADC – BIO John Shields is currently the Program Director for the Men’s Residential Program and Recovery Home Services at Gateway Independence in Chicago. John has been with Gateway for over 5 years, beginning as a Counselor II in the Dual Diagnosis program. Before joining Gateway, John also served in clinical roles at Regional Mental Health in East Chicago, IN and South Suburban Council in Hazel Crest, IL. Before entering the addiction treatment field in 2011, John worked in the hotel industry for over 20 years. 2 CEU's will be awarded.
