Homelessness in Memphis - Do you know??

1655 individuals were identified as homeless the night of January 26, 2010. The population was interviewed at outdoor sites where homeless people were sleeping, at meal programs and drop-in centers as well as on the street. Persons in emergency shelters and transitional housing were also counted.

Approximately 6,217 individuals were homeless and housed in emergency shelters/transitional housing in the year from 10/01/2008 through 9/30/2009. This included 4,100 unaccompanied individuals and 2,117 people in 643 families with children. Of these, 5,459 homeless individuals were documented in Memphis Homeless Management information System. Walk the Streets with Us

WHEN: Saturday, October 2, 2010. Registration begins at 8:30a.m., with the walk starting around 10:00a.m., rain or shine. A pre-walk ceremony will be held at 9:30a.m.

WHERE: Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church (map and address at right) marks the start and finish for the event. The route covers 5 miles through Midtown Memphis and includes locations of several agencies that the Walk for Homeless benefits.

REST STOPS: Four sites will be available where walkers can rest, get water, or tour one of the agencies. Vans will also drive the route for those who are unable to complete the full distance.

CONTRIBUTIONS: Participants are encouraged to recruit as many sponsors as possible who will contribute a minimum of $1.00 per mile. Donations should be collected in advance and turned in to the registration officials the morning of the walk.

PRIZES: Each walker producing specific sums will receive the following prizes:

• $300 or more - Eligible for Grand Prize Drawing
• $50 Memphis Walks for the Homeless official T-shirt
• All Registrants eligible for door prize drawings.
