Scenic Ocean Driveaway Along Rt 12, Outer Banks

The votes are in and the overwhelming pick for Columbus Day Weekend was the scenic Outer Banks drive- rated one of the Top drives in the nation by National Geographic. We will fly into Norfolk, VA to cut a few hours off our drive time and then pick up our rental car there to begin our trip down Rt 12 in the outer banks. We will meander down this 80 mile beach drive over the course of the weekend. It runs along a meeting place of land and ocean, of human activity and wilderness. The Outer Banks of NC are a chain of narrow barrier islands that curve out into the Atlantic Ocean and back again like a protecting arm. They have withstood thousands of years of wind and wave. Blue green waters with long stretches of dunes and seagrass. All along the islands there are historic lighthouses, small seaside villages with great food and shopping, migrating birds and the beauty of the sea that we will enjoy. We will be staying in charming roadside motels or inns along the way and there will be time for optional activities such as kayaking, horseback riding, museum stops, hiking and of course a filling breakfast each day.
