Overture Announces Playhouse Series

Reduced Shakespeare Company, Milwaukee Rep and Henrik Ibsen to Come to
The Playhouse; Subscriptions Start at $69

Overture Center for the Arts today announced the Dewitt Ross & Stevens Playhouse Series, featuring three plays to be performed in The Playhouse during the 2009/10 Overture Presents season. Reduced Shakespeare Company will perform The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), New York’s Aquila Theater will mount Henrik Ibsen’s classic An Enemy of the People, and Milwaukee Repertory Theater will present Almost, Maine. Each two-and-a-half week run will consist of 21 performances, including Wednesday and Saturday matinees.

“There’s no way to replace the Rep,” said Overture Center President and CEO Tom Carto. “But this series will go a long way toward filling the gap they left in bringing the highest quality professional theater to Madison. These shows, along with CTM’s productions of Little Women: The Musical, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse and Narnia as well as Madison Opera's performances of Britten's Turn of the Screw will keep the magic alive in the Playhouse all year. It is a wonderful space and we are thrilled that it will provide so many fantastic opportunities for theatergoers in the 2009/10 season.”

Reduced Shakespeare Company revives its most beloved show, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) from Thursday, December 3 through Sunday, December 20, 2009. Since its 1981 origins as a pass-the-hat act in California, Reduced Shakespeare Company has created six stage shows, several TV programs, and numerous radio pieces—all of which have been performed, seen and heard the world over.

Aquila Theatre brings its thrilling new production of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People Thursday, March 11 through Sunday, March 28, 2010. The bold script presents issues that remain prescient even 127 years after its first production as it explores the impact of severe eco-issues on a small town and the consequences to one man of uncovering the truth. This landmark play has inspired numerous adaptations and revivals, including Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. In keeping with the play’s themes, Aquila is producing An Enemy of the People as a green production with the smallest possible carbon footprint.

Milwaukee Repertory Theater brings its production of Almost, Maine down I-94 from Thursday, April 22 through Sunday, May 9, 2010. Against the dazzling backdrop of the Aurora Borealis, Almost, Maine follows the residents and visitors of a small northern town as they fall in and out of love at an alarming rate. Love is discovered; hearts are broken and mended—almost—in what the playwright, John Cariani, calls “a midwinter night’s dream.” Laura Gordon will direct a cast that features acclaimed Rep Resident Acting Company Members Deborah Staples and Gerard Neugent.

Subscriptions to all three shows go on sale June 11, and single tickets will be available August 15. A three-show subscription will cost just $69 for Tuesday evening and Wednesday matinee performances, or $99 for all other shows. Single tickets for each of the three shows will cost $26 for Tuesday evening and Wednesday matinee performances, and $36 for all other shows.
