The 3nd Annual Kilroyâs Art in the Park celebration has established itself as a must attend Madison event. Stemming from a passion that developed over years of collecting urban art the event started as an off-the-radar side element of what was formerly Party in the Park. These rebellious beginnings are fitting since the event has featured a live graffiti wall which has been and continues to be the main focus of this family focused - alcohol, drug and glass free event.
Lead organizer since 2008, Kimberley Coonts said, âWeâve grown tremendously in the last two years from over 100 participants and 15 artists in 2008 to about 300 participants and 35 artists last year. We continue to grow in the hope of bringing acceptance of graffiti as art to not just Madison, but the entire Midwest.â Event organizers expect a full day of participants and nearly 50 artists.
Following suit, this year the organizers are building upon the legacy with a power packed schedule of live graffiti and local Madison musicians. The day starts at 10:00am with a 320 foot live permission wall that will continue to be painted and displayed throughout the entire event. Graffiti artists of all ages from across Madison will converge at Brittingham Park to share their master crafts of inventive messaging and creative compositions. Kimberley has been known to say, âItâs the most fun you can have watching paint dry.â
While the permission wall is a main attraction, it is just the beginning. Expanding the event, organizers paid attention to all the elements of a great show atmosphere. âThis event is important because it brings all ages and all elements of Hip Hop together all day in the park â" live â" so the Madison community can learn about all five elements: The DJ, The Bboy/Bgirl, The MC, The Graffiti Artist, & Knowledge,â says co-organizer MC Starr of the Fall Guys.
Music starts at 12pm and throughout the day, participants will be captivated by visual art and performances while listening to some of Madisonâs finest such as DJ Pain 1, DJ C-Dab, MSP, Flip Phil, MC Starr, Isodynamics, Dr. Diction w/DJ Seven & UNT, DJ Fusion, Mr. S., and local Electronic DJs Mike Carlson, Mr. Dance, P-Rez, Techsmith, and Just Elmo. Once again the event will incorporate breakdancing by FOB and others.
