Indie & Melodic Rock, Americana, Pop & Soul
Louisville's own ULTRATONE have always been able to pull from different styles while maintaining an unmistakable sound of their own. If you took Jeff Buckley, Tears for fears, Pink Floyd, and Coldplay, put them in a sack and shook really hard, out would come their fourth album, A World With No Pain, which released earlier this year. Live, the band shines with tight, emotional performances, atmospheric layers of sound, a powerful yet tasteful rhythm section, a vocal style with a lot of dimension, and intelligent, hook-laden songwriting…and, yes, very infectious in the ear worm department.
MIKE MUSIKANTO walks the line between Indie-Blues and Urban Americana, while borrowing elements of Experimental Folk and broken-down Orchestral music. With a propensity toward heartbreaking ballads and melodic melodrama, Mulikanto's songs survive the bite of a Chicago Winter and the soul of a Midwestern bon-fire. He carries the lyrical weight of folks like Van Morrison and Elliott Smith and the driving tone of Ray Lamontagne and Amos Lee while his narratives rattle the core of the human spirit leaving you feeling like an outsider who witnessed something very real. His first play in Louisville was back in May, sharing the Slayton's stage with Scott Miller. MARC SCIBILIA's self-titled debut EP, Bright Day Coming, is more reminiscent of his newfound Nashville roots than his New York upbringing. With touches of both Matt Nathanson and Amos Lee (again!), Scibilia sings poignant songs littered with second-person verses that are aimed directly at the listener, touched with the slightest tinge of soul. (And guess who his booking agent is? None other than Kopecky Family Band's frontman, Gabe Simon.)
