Event Focus:

Fun, food and numbers mash-up to build an informative data visualization projects (maps, interactive graphic) using open data on immigration.

Journalists, developers, coders, designers, and open data activists – you are all invited!

If you've never been to a hackathon before, this is your opportunity. We will explore open data sources and mix them with a little coding, design, and a little web tech to create something new.

Hackathons are also a great place to meet other people and start new projects!

What skills are needed?

All the skills you'll need are your enthusiasm and willingness to have a great time at our hackathon. If you know a few programming languages, this event is for you; but if you have a desire to learn digital map design, basic programming, cellphone video production, or interactive graphics; this event is for you as well.

Bring ideas, your laptop, and help shape the future of information.

 Data:

The organizers will provide the data for the hackathon. The data will be in CSV, Excel and SPSS formats to speed up the event.

Goals:

Create teams with at least one programmer, journalist and designer. The goal for each group is to build data visualizations on immigration.

A news application can also crowdsource data or be a game. A good goal for the day is to produce 560x400 pixel application that can be embedded into any web page.

Your creativity is your limit. You don't have to be programmer to participate!

Plus workshops in:

Data mining (analyze, filter and find patterns in data in order to create journalistic stories.

Census (How to find data).

Video (How to create videos with your cell phone and embed them in data maps).

Social Media (Be a master on Twitter).
